Hiking trails and paths through the landscape
The signposted Great Glen Way runs for 75 miles or 120 kilometres from Fort William to Inverness and passes through Spean Bridge.
The Great Glen Way can be walked in 4 to 7 days. For a multi-day route, this range can be used as a rough planning framework for the connection between Fort William and Inverness.
Another connection into the surrounding landscape is provided by the East Highland Way. It passes through Leanachan Forest and continues to Spean Bridge. Leanachan Forest offers cycling and walking trails. When choosing a route, it is helpful to distinguish between the route to Spean Bridge and the cycling and walking trails within the forest.
Killiechonate Forest also has a network of paths. This is connected to Spean Bridge by a new path. In addition, unpaved routes run from Torlundy on the outskirts of Fort William to Spean Bridge. When hiking, this surface should be taken into account when choosing a route.
Military history and Clan Cameron
The Commando Memorial near Spean Bridge is of national and international significance. It stands on elevated ground above Spean Bridge and the Great Glen. The area around the memorial was used to train commandos during the Second World War. The memorial and its surroundings are therefore connected with commando training during the Second World War.
The Clan Cameron Museum is located in Achnacarry near Spean Bridge. It presents the history of Clan Cameron from its early beginnings to the present day. From 1942 to 1945, Achnacarry House accommodated the Commando Training Depot of the Allied forces. Clan history and the history of commando training therefore come together in Achnacarry.
