Places of interest in Hartenstein and the surrounding area include Stein Castle. The partially late Romanesque castle complex is located in the Zwickauer Mulde valley. In the Upper Castle, the museum presents the history of Hartenstein Castle and Stein Castle. The Stein Castle Museum features historical weapons, ring and plate armor, legal antiquities, an executioner's sword, and instruments of torture. From the upper castle courtyard and the battlement, you can enjoy views across the castle complex and the Hartenstein Forest.

Nature

The approximately 18-meter-long Princes' Cave, which can be explored on foot, is located in the Poppenwald forest north of Hartenstein. It was carved into the rock as a medieval miners' tunnel. A rocky but secured path leads past the “Zur Prinzenhöhle” forester's lodge to the cave.

The protected landscape area encompasses the Mulde valley from Stein Castle to the Princes' Cave; the Hartenstein Forest nature reserve lies at its center. The landscape area's distinctive rocky cliffs include Knoblauchfelsen and the Princes' Cave. Large expanses of forest surround Hartenstein, and signposted hiking trails provide access to the landscape.

Culture and Leisure

The “Weißes Roß” inn stands on Hartenstein's old market square; it is a historic half-timbered building dating from 1625.

Hartenstein Adventure Pool features a 53-meter-long water slide, two diving towers, three pools, a baby pool, a large sunbathing lawn, and sports and play facilities.

Routes and Getting There

There are 100 kilometers of signposted hiking trails in the area around Stein Castle and Hartenstein railway station. The Mulde Cycle Route passes Stein Castle.

Hartenstein can be reached via the Hartenstein exit of the A72, by bus, and by the Erzgebirgsbahn railway.
