The Steffeln Volcanic Garden offers an approximately one-hour circular walking trail. It is part of a geotope considered unique in Central Europe.
If you are considering Steffeln for your stay, you may want to find or book a hotel.
Nature
Inside the Steffelberg crater, the Volcanic Garden displays layers formed by eruptions. A 24-stop trail explains volcanic phenomena. The circular route also includes a viewing point with panoramic views over the Volcanic Eifel.
The municipality of Steffeln, including the district of Auel, is home to six dry maars of varying sizes as well as a number of volcanic cones. The Steffelner Drees is classified as an iron-rich calcium-magnesium bicarbonate mineral spring.
Culture and History
St. Michael's Church stands on the southern slope of a distinctive tuff rock at the eastern edge of Steffeln. Palagonite tuff was used as the building material; it was quarried immediately below the site in a quarry that has been used since Roman times.
The Wahlhausen Votive Chapel stands approximately one kilometre northeast of Steffeln on a hill at an elevation of 560 metres above sea level.
Trails and Information
The information boards in the Volcanic Garden are written in German, English and Dutch.
The Volcano Trail includes a stage from Steffeln to Gerolstein and lists Jünkerath railway station as a possible starting point with a rail connection. By prior arrangement, the Eifelverein offers guided hikes in the Volcanic Garden for groups.
