Nachtsheim: Circular Route and Accommodation

Planning the Strühmannspettje

The precise route details are 11.7 kilometres, approximately three and a half hours, and moderate difficulty. The rounded description of it as a twelve-kilometre circular trail refers to the same route. It passes through the Mimbach Valley to Heinzelmännchens Höhle and offers views across the valley from reclining benches above the cave. That is a specific reason to choose the trail for a day trip; it is not a short, accessible village loop. The tourism description explicitly notes that it is only suitable to a limited extent for people with health or mobility impairments.

According to the route information, some sections are inadequately signposted. So download the route map and GPX track before setting off. Parking is mentioned at the community hall, provided it is not being used for another purpose. Also check the weather, daylight hours and return time. The route also passes historical sites, but identify the individual stops using the current map rather than trying to find them based only on a general description of the village.

Grotto, church and Roman traces

A small rock grotto was built in 1937 in Nachtsheim’s “Kesselchen.” An altar stone with a statue of the Virgin Mary was set into the rock; a staircase and seating were added during a later renovation. St. Stephen’s Parish Church houses a Pietà that was restored and put back on display in 2002. The group of figures had previously been in storage for more than 30 years because of damage. Access to the church interior depends on current opening hours.

The Roman burial ground near Nachtsheim was laid out as a burial garden with tumuli south of the Koblenz–Liège Roman road. A roadside vicus stood along the road. By contrast, the Heinzelmännchen, who according to local legend fled from Cologne to Nachtsheim, belong to folklore and are not a historical finding.
