Hiking and Landscape

The Juniper Trail provides information about the origins and ecological significance of juniper heathlands, dwarf-shrub heaths and mat-grass meadows. At the same time, it follows landscape features of cultural and historical significance. The heath plant communities around the route developed from a traditional land-use system and shaped the Eifel landscape until the 19th century.

Intact juniper heathland areas have been preserved in the vicinity of Heckenbach. The Juniper Trail begins and ends at the former Tannenberg inn in Niederheckenbach. It offers a 14-kilometre loop as well as a shorter 11-kilometre loop.

Culture and History

The historic buildings include St. Margareta in Blasweiler, a hall church dating from around 1300. The churchyard contains eight grave crosses from the 16th to the 18th century, as well as three cast-iron crosses from the 19th century.

St. Pankratius and Margarita, a hall church built in 1828–1829, stands in Niederheckenbach. The church contains an altar and Stations of the Cross from Maria Laach and is considered a place also visited by people from outside the village.

St. Michael's Chapel, a hall church from the 18th century, is located in Oberheckenbach.
