Mill Nature Trail and Water Play Island
The Mill Nature Trail, which opened in summer 2025, is located right beside the sports field, the starting point for the Premium Trail P2 Frankershäuser Karst. It connects a playground, a gathering place and a nature trail. At the Water Play Island, visitors can experience firsthand how water brings life and movement. This gives the nature trail its own connection to water, while the Hie- und Kripplöcher represent karst formations and routes through the landscape. When choosing between the excursion destinations, visitors can thus distinguish between landforms and a route on the one hand, and learning about water on the other.
Berkatal Local History Museum
The Berkatal Local History Museum is on the upper floor of the municipal administration building at Berkastraße 54. It is open by telephone appointment, so arrange your visit by phone. Its focus is on life, housing and work in the region in earlier times. Regional mining history is a particular focus.
On display are rocks and minerals with information about their uses, old miners’ lamps and mining equipment, as well as prehistoric exhibits from the Meißner foothills. Other tools illustrate agriculture and woodworking crafts; flax and wool processing are also documented. The museum therefore combines the history of mining and geological materials with insights into agricultural and craft activities. It offers a different way to explore the area than the trails: the focus is on past ways of life and work, rather than the landscape along the way.
Cycling Tour and Regional Context
The Anger cycling tour connects the village greens in the districts of the municipality of Meißner with the village green in Frankershausen, the seat of the municipality of Berkatal. These village greens are the unifying theme; by contrast, the Premium Trail P2 runs from Frankershausen through the Hielöcher to Ellerstein and Großer Marstein. This makes it easier to distinguish between the two options by their respective focus: a cycling tour between village greens, or a hiking route with named destinations in the karst area.
As part of the wider destination of Werra-Meißner-Kreis, the district is a tourist destination within the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park.
