Abtsteinach: Art Trail, Quarry and Routes

Abtsteinach can be approached through specific travel interests: the Art Trail, culture in Ober-Abtsteinach, hiking and mountain biking routes, and the Mackenheim quarry. Art, local history and quarry nature

More than 130 weather-resistant sculptures and paintings are permanently installed along the Art Trail. In Ober-Abtsteinach, St. Boniface Church dates from the 17th century. The Art Trail and the church offer different points of interest: one features permanently installed works of art, while the other is a building with historical significance. In 2025, a geopoint ensemble at the Mackenheim quarry’s viewing platform was renovated. The quarry’s restored areas provide habitats for threatened animal and plant species. These include sand lizards, yellow-bellied toads, greenfinches and eagle owls, as well as rare plants such as hare’s lettuce and common centaury.

Comparing hiking trails

The A 6 Quarry Trail is about 12 kilometres long, has 404 metres of elevation gain, and includes a detour to the Mackenheim Geopoint, which overlooks the quarry. The A 1 Panorama Trail is about 17 kilometres long and has 972 metres of elevation gain. It passes five Odenwald elevations, each over 500 metres high. In direct comparison, the A 1 is longer and has more elevation gain; the A 6 includes a detour with a view into the quarry. This lets you weigh up the routes based on their distances and the character of each trail.

Cross-country skiing and mountain biking

Members of the SGU Ski Club groom the Hardberg cross-country ski trail when there is enough snow. Trail grooming is therefore snow-dependent; check conditions before travelling if cross-country skiing is important to your plans. The A1 – Abtsteinach mountain bike route is a 27-kilometre loop around Abtsteinach with 830 metres of elevation gain. Technically, it is relatively easy, but it should not be underestimated in terms of fitness. These two requirements go together: a relatively easy technical rating does not mean the loop is undemanding physically.

More perspectives in the Bergstraße region

In Heppenheim, within the wider Bergstraße destination, you’ll find the “Wein & Stein” experience trail. It is about 6.9 kilometres long and has around 70 information stations. The annual autumn hike along the trail takes place on 3 October from 10:00 to 18:00. Along the route, hikers can enjoy wines and food at five stations in the vineyards; check the event details as you plan your trip. In the Bergstraße district, gentle vineyards also meet the Odenwald.
