Winter and Mountains

A marked, 19-kilometer trekking route begins in the center of Mestia and leads to the Chalaad Glacier in 6–8 hours. It reaches an elevation of 1,920 meters and offers views of the Chalaad icefall and glacial debris. Chalaad is considered a glacier whose tongue extends below 2,000 meters down to the tree line.

The Mestia–Zuruldi Ridge route is 14 kilometers long and designed as a trekking or horseback-riding route; alternatively, there is a cable car. At the mountain station, there is a viewpoint with binoculars. From there, expansive views extend over Mestia, Ushba, Chatin, Tetnuldi, and other peaks of the Caucasus.

From the center of Mestia, a marked, 15.6-kilometer trekking or horseback-riding route also leads in about eight hours to the Koruldi Lakes at an elevation of 2,740 meters. It runs through alpine meadows and offers views toward the Svaneti Ridge, Ushba, and Mount Bzhedukh.

Culture and History

Mestia has 45 traditional Svan defensive towers. They are considered fortifications 24 meters high, with characteristic Svan battlements. The streets also feature medieval fortifications, churches, and buildings, including Matskhovari Church, Seti Archangel Church, and Pusti Church.

Mestia’s Art and Culture Center presents local culture through Svan music and dance.

Gora Meptash and Gora Gul are located in the immediate vicinity of Mestia. Razvaliny Guli, Gora Latral’dash, and Gora Banchirvan are located in the area around Mestia. In the wider regional surroundings of Mestia lies Razvaliny Nizhniy Kyzgen.
