When choosing accommodation in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, it helps to consider what you want your stay to focus on: high-mountain landscapes and outdoor activities, or the historic buildings of Mtskheta. Juta combines an elevation of 2,200 metres with a specific hiking route. The Chiukhi Massif is visited by winter sports enthusiasts as well as hikers, mountaineers, and climbers.

Landscapes and outdoor activities

Kazbegi National Park lies in the historic valley on the northern slopes of the Caucasus. 35% of its area is forested; the rest consists of alpine pastures, moraines, snow-covered peaks, and rugged rocks. Those interested in forests will find a landscape to explore there, as will travellers who want to focus on alpine pastures and high-mountain terrain.

Sabaduri Forest can also be described in specific terms: the road from Gldani to Tianeti runs through the forest for 8 km, where beech, oak, and lime trees grow. This offers a distinct landscape experience along the road; it is not a description of a hiking route.

Bazaleti Lake is a volcanic lake in the Dusheti region. It covers 1.22 km² and reaches a maximum depth of seven metres. Visitors can swim, fish, go boating, and take part in beach sports at the lake. Those who want to combine their stay with activities on the water have a named location and several specific options to consider.

In Juta, the main hiking trail starts in the village centre and leads to Juta Lake at the foot of the Chiukhi Massif. The trail is almost 4 km long and takes about 1.5 hours. Juta lies at an elevation of 2,200 metres and is one of Georgia’s highest mountain villages. These details make the village particularly interesting to travellers considering altitude and a specific hike. The Chiukhi Massif is visited by hikers, mountaineers, climbers, and winter sports enthusiasts.

There are several campsites in the Iveri River valley north of Tianeti. This may be relevant to travellers considering camping as an overnight option. A separate cultural attraction nearby is the Tianeti Local Museum, which displays archaeological materials discovered in the surrounding area.

Mtskheta and historic culture

Mtskheta is the administrative centre of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region and is considered a museum city. Its historic buildings include the present-day Samtavro Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Samtavro is a stone-built episcopal church dating from the first half of the 11th century. The present-day Svetitskhoveli Cathedral was built between 1010 and 1029. This gives travellers a specific cultural focus in Mtskheta, centred on two buildings with distinct historical details.

Armaztsikhe lies south of Mtskheta. It existed from the 4th century BC to the 8th century AD and includes a royal palace, a church, a wine cellar, and auxiliary buildings. Jvari Monastery stands on a rocky cliff east of the city. These places offer different historical points of reference: Armaztsikhe is associated with a long span of time and several types of buildings, while Jvari is characterised by its location east of Mtskheta.

Dambalkhacho is also part of the cultural picture: it is listed as one of Georgia’s intangible cultural heritage monuments. It adds another aspect of cultural heritage alongside the historic buildings, without itself being a building.

If you’d like to explore the region further, you can also visit Gudauri.
