Jämsänkoski: Winter Sports, Industrial Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Jämsänkoski
Jämsänkoski is home to the Huhdavuori Ski Center. At the same time, the town is shaped by a long history of hydropower use, preserved industrial facilities and attractions focused on local history. Rapids and nearby forests add nature and outdoor activities to the experience. When choosing accommodation, you can start by considering whether winter sports, industrial history, local collections or recreation by the water will shape your stay.
Hydropower and Industrial History
Jämsänkoski is an industrial community on a narrow stretch of rapids along the upper reaches of the Jämsänjoki River. Hydropower has a long history here. Preserved facilities also bring the town’s industrial character to life: the industrial area is home to an acid tower and a sulfur container dating from the 1960s. Those interested in the town’s technical and economic history will find tangible evidence here that differs from traditional museum collections.
An old mill and a power plant built in 1922 still stand at Rekolankoski, upstream from Koskikeskus. The two buildings reflect different forms of water use. Together with the preserved facilities from the 1960s, they offer a way to discover Jämsänkoski through its industrial history as well as its winter sports.
Museums and Mementos
The Aarresaari Local History Museum comprises ten buildings. Visitors can learn about the area’s agricultural and industrial history there. The number of buildings makes Aarresaari a destination in its own right for travelers who want to take time to explore the town’s history. Family events are also held on the museum grounds: a family Christmas celebration has taken place there since 1998, and a family midsummer celebration is held annually.
At Taidetalo Pässinmäki, the main building houses a permanent exhibition from the foundation’s collections. The mementos on display include the memorial crosses of the Winter War and the Continuation War, along with their award certificates. Also on display is the Knight’s Cross awarded to Tauno Savolainen, Mannerheim Cross Knight No. 24. These objects give the visit a different focus from the industrial facilities or the local history museum.
Water, Activity and Nature
Koskikara Swimming Pool offers a sports pool, a therapy pool, a children’s pool and a gym. There is also a sauna and a steam room. In summer, Koskikara offers swimming at nearby Koskikeskinen; in winter, ice swimming is possible there. The facilities therefore include both different types of pools and seasonal outdoor activities. Oinaala Sports Center adds to the sporting options with athletics and football fields. In the center of Jämsänkoski, Jukka-Virtanen Field has a grass pitch and a 500-seat grandstand.
Those looking to spend time outdoors will find rapids and nearby forests in the natural surroundings. Myllymäki DiscGolfPark also provides a clear point of reference: its first tee and information board are located at the edge of the parking lot at the Jämsänkoski ice rink. When planning your trip, you can weigh up nature, activity and the town’s cultural and historical attractions.
Other Places to Explore
If you want to compare different destinations, you can also include Jämsä and Juokslahti in your plans. In Jämsänkoski itself, FinnMetko is held every two years. Events at the Aarresaari grounds offer further opportunities to discover the town; you can take their dates into account when planning your specific trip.
