South Karelia: Nature, Saimaa and Culture
Accommodation in South Karelia
South Karelia combines landscape and cultural experiences: the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark focuses on geology and cultural heritage, while museums, lakeside paths and regional specialities offer further inspiration for your trip. Nearby, you can also visit Lappeenranta Fortress and the Imatrankoski Rapids.
For a regional overview, you can explore the subregions of Imatra, Joutseno and Rauha.
Geopark, Lake District and Nature
The Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the provinces of South Karelia and South Savo in eastern Finland. It comprises 65 geological sites that bring together geology and cultural heritage and can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by boat. This allows you to shape your trip around your preferred way of getting around; the sites offer varied insights into the landscape and its history.
A nature trail in the Lepänkanto area leads to a recreational area and a long sandy beach. The marked trail also runs alongside the clear waters of Lake Kuolimo and passes traces of the Ice Age and Stone Age life. If you would like to combine nature with early landscape history, this trail offers a specific place to start. The Hiitolanjoki River in Rautjärvi is home to Finland’s last remaining population of native, fully wild landlocked salmon.
Museums and History in Lappeenranta
Lappeenranta Fortress is home to three museums: the Lappeenranta Art Museum, the South Karelia Museum and the Cavalry Museum. The fortress is also part of the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark. The South Karelia Museum is located at the northern tip of the fortress in a warehouse originally built as an artillery depot. Its permanent exhibition, “The Story of South Karelia,” was completed in 2025 and covers topics ranging from the region’s prehistory to the present day. The museum offers guided tours and hosts events and workshops.
The Karelia Aviation Museum is also nearby. Its permanent exhibition includes Finnish Air Force fighter aircraft, a training aircraft, a helicopter and a glider, as well as engines and recovered wreckage. The Ylämaa Gem Museum was founded in 1982. When planning your trip, you can take into account different museum interests, from regional history to aviation and gemstones.
Cycling Routes, a Lakeside Path and Trips on Lake Saimaa
The Saimaa Archipelago Route starts in Lappeenranta and takes cyclists through the islands of Lake Saimaa and changing rural landscapes. Several sites in the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark can be visited along the route. If you would like to combine a cycling tour with Geopark themes, this named route provides specific points of interest to help with your planning.
The Rantaraitti lakeside path is 14.8 km long, follows the shores of Lake Saimaa and is easy to reach from Lappeenranta city centre. At some points, it leads away from the shore. If staying close to the water throughout is important to you, take these sections into account when deciding. Scenic cruises through the archipelago and along the Saimaa Canal also depart from Lappeenranta harbour.
Nearby, you can admire the Imatrankoski Rapids year-round; Kruununpuisto Nature Park surrounds them. Public performances with musical accompaniment take place there in summer. Alongside the landscape experiences, this offers a seasonal cultural event to include in your plans.
Regional Specialities
At Säräpirtti Kippurasarvi, you can try Lemi särä. This regional speciality has been made in South Karelia for a thousand years. In summer, Harbour Square in Lappeenranta offers local specialities such as the meat pies vety and atomi. These two culinary recommendations differ both in what they offer and in season: Lemi särä represents a long-established regional speciality, while vety and atomi are served as summer fare at Harbour Square.
When looking for accommodation, you can use these varied travel interests as a guide—for example, museum visits, exploring on foot or by bicycle, trips on Lake Saimaa or regional cuisine. The activities that matter most to you can help shape your plans for South Karelia.
