Hollola combines the skiing on offer at Messilä with hiking trails, a distinctive Geopark landscape and historic buildings. Messilä Ski Resort has 10 ski slopes and 9 ski lifts. This gives you a clear overview of the local slopes and lifts when choosing Hollola as a destination; other trails and attractions provide further points of reference beyond the ski resort.

Skiing and other activities in Messilä

The figures for slopes and lifts give you a tangible sense of the range of what Messilä offers. On their own, they say nothing about the difficulty of individual slopes. If you’re looking for accommodation in Hollola for a ski holiday, you can consider what Messilä offers as one part of your choice of destination and weigh it alongside your own travel interests.

Along with skiing, Messilä offers cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobile safaris. These are different ways to enjoy the surrounding area through outdoor activities. If you’re travelling with people who have different interests, you can consider which of these activities matter to your group when planning your trip. This does not imply any information about individual routes or local conditions.

Hiking trails and landscapes around Hollola

Kapatuosia Hill has marked hiking trails and a lookout tower at its summit. There is an important restriction on the trails: they should be used on foot and only on the signposted routes, as the ground on the slopes can easily give way. Follow the markers there. The hill and its surroundings were already inhabited in the Stone Age, about 8,000 years ago.

At 223 metres, Tiirismaa is the highest point in southern Finland. Its cliff area is nationally recognised for its nature conservation and landscape value. Tiirismaa is also home to the Pirunpesä Gorge: a fissure in quartzite rock that has been known as an excursion destination since the 19th century. A signposted 4.5-kilometre hiking trail passes by the gorge. Its length and route give you specific points to consider if you include it in your excursion plans.

The lake trail circles three lakes, all called Tiilijärvi. It is 7.5 kilometres long and runs along roads, forest paths and wooden boardwalks. These different types of path are relevant for planning; you should also take the route length into account. Another circular route, the 27-kilometre trail through Hollola Church Village, goes via Salpakangas and Hälvälä to Messilä and back. Don’t confuse it with the Hollola–Messilä–Hollola cycling route, which is the same length: it starts in the centre of Hollola.

Hollola is part of the Salpausselkä Geopark complex, which was included in UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network in 2022. Together with Tiirismaa and the Pirunpesä Gorge, this landscape offers a distinct focus for travellers who want to plan a stay that goes beyond skiing.

Church Village and architectural history

Several buildings in Hollola Church Village bring different aspects of the area’s history to life. Hollolan Vanha Kunnantupa and the medieval church tower form an ensemble of national significance in terms of architectural history and landscape. The Church of St Mary in Hollola was built between 1495 and 1510. It is known for its richly decorated west gable and a well-preserved wooden sculpture inside.

Hollolan Pappila is a historic building erected in 1813 on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi, beside Hollola’s medieval stone church. For choosing a destination, this means that Hollola offers specific points of interest for visitors who want to include architectural history and landscapes in their trip, as well as winter sports.

The Messilä guest harbour is also described in practical detail: it has a guest jetty, guest moorings, facilities for disposing of household and waste oil, and drinking water. If you’d like to include another place in your comparison, you can also find Lahti.
