Luosto: Skiing, Winter Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Luosto
Lapland Ski Resort has 10 slopes. This provides a concrete starting point when choosing accommodation in Luosto: in addition to the ski resort, the area offers winter cycling routes, snowshoe trails and other activities. Which of these matter for your trip depends on whether you mainly want to ski or plan to enjoy a variety of experiences.
Slopes and activities for different interests
The ski resort’s family slope area has two slopes. The Adventure Trail runs through the forest, while the Family Slope is wide and safe. The two offerings therefore differ in their described routes and slope width. If you’re travelling with children or accommodating different preferences in a group, you can use these features as a guide.
The family slope area also has a magic carpet. It takes visitors to the tubing and toboggan hill. So, in addition to the two slopes, the area offers the option of tubing and tobogganing. When planning, you can distinguish between spending time on the slopes and at the tubing and toboggan hill; no information about opening hours or current conditions is implied.
Winter trails, views and nature
Luosto has 12 kilometres of winter cycling trails. Snowshoe trails are marked with blue trail signs and are suitable for snowshoeing. They are not maintained. Bear this distinction in mind if you’re considering a marked snowshoe route: the signs indicate the trails, but they are not regularly maintained.
Another option for an outing is the trail to the summit of Ukko-Luosto. It is 4 kilometres long and leads to a viewpoint. The ascent involves climbing 575 steps. The trail length and number of steps can help you assess this outing as a separate item on your itinerary.
The Luosto area is also part of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, one of Finland’s oldest national park areas. Its connection with the national park offers an additional point of reference for travellers who want to consider the landscape as well as the winter sports activities. To make a specific choice, it may be helpful to weigh the activities described according to your own interests, rather than seeing them as one combined excursion programme.
Visits to the Amethyst Mine and fishing
Guided visits to the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine are possible year-round, except for a few weeks in May and November, when weather conditions make the journey to the mine unsafe. Visitors can search for their own lucky amethyst there and keep it as a souvenir. If you’re planning a visit, take the stated exceptions in May and November into account; no specific availability on any particular day is guaranteed for the other periods.
Ahvenlampi Pond is in the centre of Luosto and is an easily accessible fishing spot. Jetties around the pond make it easier to cast from the shore. A permit is required for fishing. These requirements are important when planning: the location offers a described fishing opportunity, but a permit is also required. Fishing at the pond is a different activity from skiing, tobogganing or winter cycling, and may interest travellers who are also considering fishing.
Getting there and other destinations
Luosto can be reached from Rovaniemi Airport by direct bus services that operate year-round. This describes a bus connection for the journey; it does not include information about journey times, departure times or connections. If you’d also like to view other destination pages, you can find Sirkka, Napapiiri, Äkäslompolo, Salla, Räisälä, Rautuskylä, Ylläsjärvi and Muonio here.
