Roskilde: World Heritage, Urban History and Fjord Paths
Accommodation in Roskilde
Roskilde offers historic buildings, urban history and paths along the fjord. If you would like to combine a trip focused on culture with walks, you will find a range of options here: from the cathedral, museums and Roskilde Convent to signposted routes and exhibitions about life in the fjord.
World Heritage and Royal History
Roskilde Cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. The royal tombs and burial chapels showcase 800 years of architectural development in a single monument.
Guided tours of the cathedral cover the history of Denmark, 800 years of architecture and 40 royal tombs. Guided tours of Roskilde Convent cover the history of the convent from its foundation in 1231 through the Reformation era to its later establishment as a convent for noblewomen.
Museums Between Urban History and Pop Culture
The Roskilde Museum presents the history of Roskilde from prehistoric times to the modern era. It has been the city museum since 1929 and is located in the heart of Roskilde in two noteworthy listed historic buildings. One of them is Sukkerhuset, built in 1761 for sugar production; it was used for this purpose for a short period until 1779.
The Rock Museum's permanent exhibition offers a distinctly different perspective. It presents seven decades of pop and rock history.
Sankt Laurentius is a church ruin with a tower. At Sankt Laurentius, a ten-minute introduction to the church ruin and tower is scheduled at the start of every hour.
Signposted Paths Along the Fjord
The signposted 12.5 km circular route “Sti til Naturen” begins at Roskilde Cathedral and leads past Roskilde Harbour and along the fjord.
From Roskilde Harbour, there is a view across the fjord and towards Roskilde Cathedral. Roskilde Oplevelseshavn has aquariums and exhibitions about life in the fjord, the national park, as well as birds and fish.
Kildestrøget is an approximately 5 km route that connects Roskilde's eight historic springs and leads through the city's nature and history. “Sti til Naturen” is therefore longer than Kildestrøget; the route begins at the cathedral and follows the fjord, while Kildestrøget connects the historic springs.
Events with a Distinctive Profile
Roskilde Festival is an independent, non-profit festival with a large and diverse programme of music, art, activism and gastronomy. Roskilde Festival 2026 was the 54th edition of the festival.
