Jelenje: Hotels and Accommodation

The Hahlić mountain hut can be reached by hikers from Podkilavac in the municipality of Jelenje and is located in the Grobnik Alps at an altitude of around 1,100 metres. From there, views extend towards the Kvarner Gulf. The hut stands on the southern slope of Obruč at just under 1,100 metres above sea level and also offers a view towards Rijeka Bay.

Nature and Trails

The Rječina Gorge is protected by law. A hiking trail follows the river and offers the opportunity to experience the gorge’s flora and fauna. The Jelenjski vrh cycling route is a difficult 13.5-kilometre circular trail with 309 metres of elevation gain.

Culture and History

The Local Museum in the municipality of Jelenje contains more than 500 exhibits. A period room and a kitchen show the interior of a house in Grobinšćina from the 19th century. It also displays old household items, tools and traditional folk costumes.

The Church of St Michael in Jelenje was built from 1812 to 1814; the final work was completed in 1821. The parish church has five bells, including one dating from 1604.

At the Spomenik Podhumskim Žrtvama memorial in Soboli, 91 shields commemorate 91 villagers who were killed in July 1942. The Claustra Alpium Iuliarum defence system comprises the remains of a wall line with five strategically positioned towers.

On the first weekend after Epiphany, the Grobnički dondolaši parade through almost all settlements in the Grobinština region in Jelenje and Čavle, ringing traditional bells.

Crafts and Regional Products

Kovačija in Jelenje has been preserved in its original form with traditional blacksmithing equipment. The blacksmith Damir Marčelja demonstrates historic blacksmithing techniques there for visitors.

At Gašparov Mill, maize and wheat are still ground using traditional methods. Visitors can buy organic flour there and see old tools.

The Festival of Polenta and Cheese takes place at the end of June and combines a large communal polenta dish with Grobnik cheese.
