Finkenberg: Cable Cars, Nature Trails and Culture

The two cable cars run from Finkenberg to the Penkenjoch. From the mountain station of the Finkenberger Almbahnen, the Granat Chapel can be reached in around 10 minutes on foot. An important planning detail is the documented restriction: The chapel is accessible only in summer. Also located at the Penkenjoch is the Capella Granata at an altitude of 2,087 m, east of the reservoir. It was designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta. The protected landscape area Glocke covers approximately 33 ha. A circular trail lasting about one hour leads through this area and allows locals and visitors to experience its natural beauty at first hand. The nature trail there connects the landscape with accessible information: Information boards and an accompanying booklet explain the particularly rich flora of the recreational area, as well as the history and geology of the Tux Valley and historic forms of land use. A second themed trail is the Penken Moor Nature Trail. It begins at the middle station of the Finkenberger Almbahnen and runs along the hiking trail to the Schrofenalm. The information boards explain the typical diversity of species in the fen, protected plants and the rich variety of wildlife. For understanding the landscape, it is also relevant that parts of the municipality of Finkenberg lie within the Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park. The Tuxbach Gorge & Glocke Nature Trail route offers views into a gorge up to 70 m deep. The Devil's Bridge provides a different perspective on the surroundings: It was built in 1876 and spans a deeply incised gorge through which the wild Tuxer Bach rushes and roars.

Bridges, Church and Local History

There are also destinations with historical significance in the immediate vicinity of the village. The Hochsteg Bridge dates from the 19th century, spans the Zemmbach and is considered a valuable example of historic timber construction. Today's St. Leonard's Church in Finkenberg was built in 1721 and has been Finkenberg's parish church since 1891. Another natural monument is a group of old beech trees west of and above Finkenberg. It was placed under protection in 1929. The Beech Tree Group natural monument is located in the Persal district and can be reached via hiking trail no. 29 towards the Innerberg district.
