Historic churches, museums, public guided tours, and trails with explanatory stations make it possible to plan your trip according to your interests. You can choose between local history, art and musical instrument collections, and a historic trail to Sankt Wolfgang.

Culture and History in Sankt Gilgen

The history of the village is reflected in several buildings. The first church in Sankt Gilgen was built around 1300 and dedicated to Saint Giles. The parish church dedicated to Saint Giles was completely remodeled from 1767 to 1769. Its church tower acquired its present appearance between 1705 and 1728. The Catholic Parish Church of St. Gilgen is open for viewing all day.

The Mozart House is also one of the historic points of interest: It is protected as a historic monument pursuant to a decision under Section 3. The courthouse built in Sankt Gilgen between 1719 and 1720 was the birthplace of Anna Maria Walburga, W. A. Mozart’s mother. Public guided tours through the Mozart village of Sankt Gilgen provide insights into local history, traditional crafts, female and male artists, and influential personalities.

Museums for Different Interests

The Musical Instrument Museum of the Peoples has a collection of more than 6,000 musical instruments from around the world. Some of the instruments are impressively demonstrated to visitors. This makes a museum visit an experience in its own right, even if you are interested not only in the collection but also in the sound and the demonstrations.

The Zinkenbacher Malerkolonie Museum in Sankt Gilgen on Lake Wolfgang explores the lives and work of artists who spent their summer holidays at the Adambauer farm in Zinkenbach during the interwar period. Every year, the museum presents exhibitions featuring works from its own collection as well as loans from museums and private collections. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between different focuses, including local history, music, and art history.

Historic Trails and Mountain Views

The historic Pilgrims’ Trail leads from Sankt Gilgen to Sankt Wolfgang and includes 24 signposted points of interest. Anyone looking for a trail with cultural and historical significance can include this route as a separate part of their stay. On the 1,522-meter-high Zwölferhorn above Sankt Gilgen, the Pillstein Panorama Circular Trail explains natural phenomena and traditional lore at twelve stations. Zwölferhorn can be reached by the Zwölferhorn cable car in 11 minutes.

When choosing your accommodation, you can first decide which of these topics should shape your stay. Museum and church visits, a public guided tour, the Pilgrims’ Trail, or the circular trail on Zwölferhorn lead to different daily itineraries. This allows you to align your search for suitable accommodation with your own interests, without reducing culture, history, and physical activity to a single travel itinerary.

If you would like to compare other destinations in addition to Sankt Gilgen, you can also find Fuschl Am See, Anthering, Seekirchen Am Wallersee, Wals-Siezenheim, Ebenau, Großgmain, Henndorf Am Wallersee, and Thalgau.
