Winter stay with cross-country skiing and hiking trails

Gitschtal offers facilities for cross-country skiers.

The hiking trail network in Gitschtal covers 200 kilometers. The Weißenbach Gorge is a limestone tufa gorge where secured ladders and footbridges make progress easier. The nature trail in the Gösseringgraben invites visitors to embark on a journey of discovery in Gitschtal.

The Reißkofel Route from Weißbriach leads via the Gailtal High Trail 229 to the Napalnalm. The Reißkofel summit route reaches 2,371 meters and requires alpine experience as well as sure-footedness. When planning the tours, both the elevation of 2,371 meters and the requirements for alpine experience and sure-footedness must therefore be taken into account.

Cycling path and discoveries in the Gösseringgraben

The Gitschtal cycling path R3b leads from Weißbriach via St. Lorenzen and Jadersdorf as well as other places to Hermagor.

During hikes through the Gösseringgraben, visitors can discover relics from the region's mining past as well as brief explanations of ore processing. The Gösseringgraben is thus connected both with the nature trail and with relics and explanations of ore processing.

Churches and architectural history in Weißbriach and St. Lorenzen

The Evangelical Church of Weißbriach was built from 1882 to 1886. Its interior contains an elaborately decorated carved altar designed according to plans by Theophil Frey. The Church of St. John in Weißbriach is considered probably the oldest church in Gitschtal and has a bell from the 15th century.

The parish church of Weißbriach is a Late Gothic building dating from around 1520. Its wall paintings date from 1616 and 1620. In St. Lorenzen, the Gothic choir of the Catholic Church of St. Lorenzen appears to have been completed as early as 1527; the Neo-Gothic nave and other structural elements were added largely in the second half of the 19th century.

Regional cuisine and special excursion destinations

Construction of the Kohlröslhütte began in 1947 with the aim of creating an excursion destination with panoramic views. Today, the Kohlröslhütte is a popular excursion destination offering delicious food and panoramic views.

The Local Food concept defines the source products, ingredients and their artisanal production and creation as originating from Gitschtal. At the Gitschtal Krautfest, dishes centered around cabbage are traditionally on the program on the first Sunday in October, including cabbage lasagna and cabbage pizza as well as sweet specialties. In mountain farmer golf, the courses revolve around everyday life on the farm and are decorated imaginatively with farming utensils. The traditional date on the first Sunday in October is a specific reference point for planning around the festival.
