The Falls Creek ski resort covers 450 hectares of ski terrain, with 90 runs accessible via 15 lifts. There are also cross-country ski trails, walking trails and other activities in the mountains and by the water.

Downhill Skiing and Cross-Country Skiing

The alpine skiing offering can be understood through three specific figures: 450 hectares of ski terrain, 90 runs and 15 lifts. Seasonal operating conditions may vary. Beginner-friendly areas are in the Drovers area and on Wombats Ramble. At 2.2 kilometres, Wombats Ramble is Australia’s longest green run. These named areas provide a useful guide for anyone planning with easier runs in mind.

Cross-country skiing is a separate way to experience the area on skis. A free network of cross-country ski trails starts at Nordic Bowl and extends into the Bogong High Plains. At the Falls Creek Cross Country Centre, you can hire cross-country ski equipment for all ages; additional accessories are also available. This makes it easy to consider cross-country skiing separately from the alpine runs when planning.

Walks and History

For a multi-day walk, the Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing runs for 37 kilometres over three days through Alpine National Park, from Falls Creek to Mt Hotham. Check conditions and access before setting out. A shorter option nearby, with a different time commitment, is the Wallaces Heritage Trail: this 6.5-kilometre trail starts at the Wallace Hut car park and takes approximately 2.5 hours. Its approximate duration is quite different from the three-day crossing.

Wallace’s Hut is also nearby. It is considered the oldest surviving cattlemen’s hut and was built in 1889 by the three Wallace brothers, Arthur, William and Stewart. The trail and the hut give the area both a specific connection to walking and a glimpse into its early history. If you plan to visit these sites, check the access conditions beforehand.

More Activities in the Mountains and by the Water

Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park has 50 kilometres of gravity trails in alpine terrain high in Victorian Alpine National Park. The trails start and finish at the resort. Individual trails may be subject to seasonal conditions or closures. This makes mountain biking a distinct activity to include in your travel plans alongside ski runs and walks, without conflating the different conditions on the trails.

Kayaking is a popular form of water recreation in Falls Creek, offering opportunities to explore more distant shores and shorelines. Water conditions and services are seasonal. Rocky Valley Lake sits at an elevation of 1,600 metres and is Australia’s highest significant body of water. Scenic waterfalls can be reached from the village entrance via a short, easy walk. These water and walking destinations are quite different in character from the longer trails and ski runs.

Museum and Accommodation Search

The Falls Creek Museum presents the area’s history through exhibits and audiovisual displays. Current opening arrangements may vary; check before visiting. When making your selection, consider which location suits your plans and which details are important for your travel group.
