Guided snowmobile rides are offered on circuits in the Valle de Tierra Mayor. Tierra del Fuego combines this specific winter experience with natural areas, marked trails and historic sites. When choosing your destinations, it is worth keeping distances and geographic connections in mind: the national park is located off Ruta Nacional 3 from Ushuaia, while other experiences extend as far as RĂo Grande and the wider region.

Natural Areas and Trails

Tierra del Fuego National Park preserves more than 68,000 hectares of the Patagonian Forests ecoregion. The park has 40 kilometers of marked trails. This information is useful for planning if you would like to include trails in the protected area in your stay; it refers to the trail network and not necessarily to a single circuit. The park is 10 kilometers from Ushuaia via Ruta Nacional 3. This makes it possible to include a visit as a destination in its own right when planning your trip, without inferring a distance from any particular accommodation.

Another natural area is Reserva CorazĂłn de la Isla. It is located in the center of Tierra del Fuego Province and protects an area of great natural and scenic value. Activities there include land-based tourism, sport fishing, birdwatching and walks. If you would rather spend your time on several kinds of activities, this area offers various options. These are specific offerings, however, not a single route linking them.

Snowmobile Circuits and Getting Your Bearings from Ushuaia

The Valle de Tierra Mayor is a glacial valley surrounded by mountains of the Andes. From Ushuaia, the Reserva Natural y Paisajística Valle de Tierra Mayor is reached by traveling 20 kilometers north along Ruta Nacional 3. Guided snowmobile rides are offered on circuits there. If you are interested in this experience, you can consider it alongside the valley’s location, but treat the journey there as a separate leg: from Ushuaia, the route heads in a different direction from the road to the national park.

The distances given for these destinations provide a practical guide when searching for accommodation. The national park is 10 kilometers from Ushuaia; the valley with its snowmobile circuits is 20 kilometers north of the city. If you are basing your plans in Ushuaia, you can find the regional context here: Ushuaia Region.

Scenery, History and Regional Experiences

The Tren del Fin del Mundo runs along a seven-kilometer route through valleys, peat bogs and Patagonian forests, stopping at the Macarena waterfall. The route also follows the former path used by inmates at the local prison to collect wood in the forest. This makes it possible to connect the journey with both the landscape and the history of the place. The seven kilometers describe the route’s length; they do not indicate the journey time or timetable.

Estancia Harberton also has a special historical significance: it was the first estancia of its kind on Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. If you are interested in the island’s history as well as its natural attractions, you can consider this as a destination in its own right. In the wider region, Isla de los Estados is also part of Tierra del Fuego’s historical heritage. Its historical sites include the remains of prison facilities, a lighthouse, cemeteries and shipwrecks.

Reserva Provincial Isla de los Estados can only be reached by ship. From Ushuaia, the route passes through the Beagle Channel; from RĂo Grande, the journey is across the Argentine Sea. This clear access restriction is important for planning and sets the island apart from destinations reachable by road. You should therefore consider it separately from visits to the national park or Valle de Tierra Mayor.

Coast and Culinary Experiences

In Río Grande, the Paseo Reserva Costa Atlántica follows a coastal route approximately three kilometers long. The approximate route length gives you a concrete point of reference if you would like to include this stretch of coast in your trip. The route is in Río Grande, making it a regional focus in its own right alongside the destinations around Ushuaia.

Another special experience is an excursion to the artisanal centolla fishery in Tierra del Fuego. Visitors can take part in the process and then enjoy the freshly cooked centolla they catch. This is a distinct culinary experience, different from trails, protected areas and historic sites. Consider it a separate activity if you are interested in regional fishing and the preparation of the catch.
