If you are looking for accommodation in Canillo, distinguishing between the town of Canillo and the wider Canillo destination helps put its attractions into context. In the town itself, the parish church of Sant Serni and the Museu de la Moto represent different cultural highlights. The wider destination adds natural and leisure attractions, as well as other cultural sites. This can help you decide whether you are mainly interested in history and technology or would also like to explore the wider region.

Culture and history in the town

The parish church of Sant Serni in Canillo houses a Baroque main altarpiece from the 17th century. It is dedicated to Sant Serni, a bishop and martyr from Toulouse who lived in the 3rd century. The two dates refer to different aspects: the artwork dates from the 17th century, while the person it commemorates is associated with the 3rd century.

The Museu de la Moto in Canillo offers a look at various types of motorcycles. Its collection includes early steam-powered motorcycles, including a model by Sylvester Howard Roper from 1867, as well as early petrol motorcycles from the late 19th century. It also features racing, road and off-road motorcycles. Together, these represent different designs and uses. The exhibition covers 700 square metres and includes 150 motorcycle models by well-known brands; it illustrates the development of the motorcycle from 1896 to 2013.

Cultural sites in the wider Canillo destination

The wider Canillo destination is home to the Romanesque bell tower of Sant Serni de Canillo. It was remodelled in the 17th century, stands 27 metres high and towers over Canillo’s old town. Also in Canillo, in the cable car building, is Espai Galobardes, a 300-square-metre gallery. It is intended to house and exhibit 524 works by Francesc Galobardes. The gallery is also intended to host exhibitions by other artists and of cultural forms of expression from Andorra and abroad.

The former sanctuary of Meritxell now houses a permanent exhibition on the history and veneration of Meritxell, the patron saint of Andorra. The sanctuary organises guided tours. Its history and current exhibition go hand in hand: the site is described as a former sanctuary and also offers a thematic insight into the veneration of Meritxell.

Nature and leisure in the wider destination

The children’s area at Family Park Canillo features slides, mini golf, bouncy castles, trampolines and Acrojump. In summer, Family Park in the Canillo sector also offers mini golf for children aged three and up, and a free outdoor play area for children aged four to eleven. The family activities are seasonal; check whether summer operations are currently running before visiting.

Among the striking structures in the wider destination is the Pont TibetĂ  de Canillo in the Vall del Riu. It is located at an altitude of more than 1,875 metres, is one metre wide and reaches up to 158 metres above the ground. In the municipality of Canillo, part of the floor at the Mirador del Roc del Quer is also made of transparent glass.

The Coma de Ransol is also known for its plant and animal life. Scots pines and junipers grow there; the herb layer includes heather, abarset and blueberries. BĂ lec grows in sunny spots. Alpine flowers include gentian, Pyrenean lily, yarrow and yellow bedstraw. The Coma de Ransol is home to wild boar, roe deer, chamois, stone martens, hares and marmots, among other animals. Sightings of these animals are not guaranteed.

Two ecotourism routes in the parish of Canillo are led by qualified professionals: they run through the Incles Valley and the Ransol Valley, also known as Coma de Ransol. The CamĂ de l'Obaga in the Incles Valley is 2.6 kilometres long one way. When planning, it is important to note that this distance refers to one direction.
