Skiing in the Zillertal

Key facts

The four major ski areas lie along the Zillertal and its side valleys, but each has different valley access points. The Zillertal Superskipass is valid in all four areas; the right accommodation depends on which valley and access point you want to make the focus of your holiday. Place names are therefore more than just places to stay: they determine which lift you can reach in the morning and whether your day begins in the main valley or a side valley.

  • The Zillertal brings together four major ski areas: Hochzillertal–Hochfügen–Spieljoch, Zillertal Arena, Mayrhofner Bergbahnen, and Ski & Glacier World Zillertal 3000.
  • Hochzillertal starts in Kaltenbach, Hochfügen is a separate access point, and the Spieljochbahn runs from Fügen.
  • The Zillertal Arena serves, among other places, Zell am Ziller, Gerlos, Königsleiten, and Hochkrimml.
  • In Mayrhofen, the Penkenbahn and Ahornbahn take you to different mountain areas; the Penken also has additional access points in Schwendau and Hochschwendberg.
  • Ski & Glacier World Zillertal 3000 includes Hintertux, Eggalm, Rastkogel, Finkenberg, and Penken/Mayrhofen.

Fügen, Kaltenbach, and Hochfügen

Three different access points are located in the northern part of the valley. The Hochzillertalbahn takes you into the Hochzillertal ski area from Kaltenbach. Hochfügen has its own access point higher up in the mountains. The Spieljochbahn starts in Fügen and serves Spieljoch mountain. All three are part of the Hochzillertal–Hochfügen–Spieljoch ski-pass area, but each has a different starting point. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore important to consider whether you would like to stay near Kaltenbach, in Fügen, or directly in Hochfügen. Hochzillertal–Hochfügen thus offers different starting points from the Spieljochbahn in Fügen.

Arena and Mayrhofen

The Zillertal Arena has access points in Zell am Ziller, Gerlos, Königsleiten, and Hochkrimml. Each of the four places offers a different valley access point; the right accommodation depends on which valley station you want to reach in the morning.

In Mayrhofen, the Penkenbahn runs from the town centre up to the Penken; the Horbergbahn in Schwendau and the Möslbahn at Hochschwendberg provide additional access to the Penken area. The Ahornbahn serves a different mountain directly from Mayrhofen. This lets you choose accommodation in town to suit the mountain area you want, rather than treating the Penken and Ahorn as the same access point.

Hintertux and Ski & Glacier World

Ski & Glacier World Zillertal 3000 combines the Hintertux Glacier, Eggalm, Rastkogel, Finkenberger Almbahnen, and Penken/Mayrhofen into a larger winter destination. Its access points extend from Finkenberg and Tux to Mayrhofen; the glacier area in Hintertux is particularly defined by its high altitude. This is a different focus from a stay geared towards Kaltenbach, Fügen, or the Zillertal Arena.
