Ski season in the Sauerland
Great skiing and sledding in the Sauerland! That’s the news from the Sauerland ski regions, from Winterberg to the Wintersport-Arena Sauerland, even before the official start of the ski season. The slopes and pistes of the Sauerland will officially open from the second weekend of Advent. The ski resorts in the Sauerland are expecting a strong influx of skiers—provided the weather continues to cooperate. And things are looking good for ski fans in the Sauerland: forecasters predict temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees by the weekend. It’s also expected to stay wintry after that, with persistent frost in the forecast.

When the official season opening for the ski resorts in the Sauerland takes place on 4 December 2010, many of the pistes will already have passed their first test. An unusually large amount of fresh snow is creating good conditions for skiing and sledding in the Sauerland. Thanks to snow cannons, around 50 centimetres of snow are assured on the Sauerland pistes. But even slopes without artificial snow can begin the ski season with mostly sufficient snow at higher elevations. The ski-lift operators in the Wintersport-Arena Sauerland, for example, expect around 100 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails and around 60 lifts open for skiing by the weekend.
“Before Christmas, our guests aren’t yet very active on skis and snowboards,” explains Michael Beckmann, chairman of the Sauerland Winter Sports Arena. The large crowds of visitors are expected at the Sauerland ski resorts from Christmas onwards and in February.
Kappe ski area: From Friday, in addition to the Käppchenhang, the ski lift on the Slalomhang will also be operating at the Sauerland Kappe ski area. The Slalomhang at Kappe is the steepest slope in Germany north of the Alps—and a treat for expert skiers, too. A special highlight at Kappe is night skiing, which will be offered from Friday evening, making it the first ski area in the Winterberg region to do so. Kappe is the first ski area in the Winterberg area to offer night skiing this season, starting on Friday evening.
Kahle Asten is gleaming under natural snow. There are already 33 centimetres, and the amount is rising. Cross-country skiers will be especially pleased: the Sauerland ski areas with trails at higher elevations are reporting mostly good conditions. More light snow is forecast. Children will be delighted, too: many of the small open slopes already have enough natural snow for sledding to get underway in the Sauerland. Many families from nearby urban areas make use of the time before Christmas and during the winter holidays to take their children sledding in the Sauerland.
