Ski Jumping Head Coach Schuster Extends Contract
“Schuster, stick to your last,” goes an old German saying. In ski jumping, it needs a slight adaptation: “Schuster, stick with your jumpers.” The German Ski Association (DSV) has extended ski jumping head coach Werner Schuster’s contract by four years. He will now be joined by a new assistant coach, 37-year-old former German ski jumping star Marc Nölke, who previously worked in Austria and had held the same position with the Austrian jumpers since 2006.
By the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, the Schuster/Nölke duo is expected to shape the German “Eagles”—who won team silver at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver—back into the world’s number-one ski jumping nation. Werner Schuster has high hopes for Nölke’s appointment: “Thanks to his extensive training and the experience he was able to gain within the Austrian system, Marc should be able to give the team’s positive development further impetus,” the Austrian Schuster told the specialist magazine kicker.

By rejuvenating the national team around reigning vice world champion Martin Schmitt, Schuster wants to put Germany back in contention for victories, both in team events and individual competitions. Former assistant coach Rolf Schilli will now be responsible for developing Germany’s young jumpers, carefully preparing new talents for the A-team.
The DSV is also setting the course early for other head coaching positions, not just in ski jumping: Former Swiss head coach Markus Cramer, from Winterberg, will become the cross-country skiing development coach, while Jochen Behle (cross-country skiing) and Hermann Weinbuch (Nordic combined) have been confirmed in their positions.
