Commemorative coin at the 2011 Ski World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

In 2011, the Alpine Ski World Championships will take place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a winter sports mecca in Upper Bavaria. As expected, the German federal government will issue a commemorative 10-euro coin to mark the occasion. The Federal Ministry of Finance announced this in a press release.

Like its predecessors, the commemorative coin will be made of 18 grams of sterling silver. The coin was designed by Berlin-based artist Bodo Broschat. The obverse will depict a slalom skier against the backdrop of a mountain peak. With this design, Broschat aims to express the combination of nature and dynamism. In the lower section of the commemorative coin, a stylized silhouette of the host town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen will be shown, while the inscription “Festivals in the Snow” will appear around the edge—the slogan of the Alpine Ski World Championships in the Upper Bavarian host town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The entire Alpine region is already looking forward to the 2011 Alpine Ski World Championships. A large influx of visitors is expected. Anyone planning to travel to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for the 2011 Alpine Ski World Championships to cheer on Maria Riesch and the others in person should book a holiday apartment in Garmisch-Partenkirchen or a hotel room in Upper Bavaria well in advance.

Preparations for the 2011 Ski World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen are on track

Alpine director Wolfgang Maier had to find a new head coach for the women's ski team, which has enjoyed great success—not only at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver— ahead of the 2011 Alpine Ski World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The previous coach, Berthold, had taken over his native Austria's men's team, which was going through a difficult period. Maier describes Stauffer as his clear first choice, saying he has all the qualities needed to continue the successful work of his predecessor. Stauffer himself said in a public interview: “I am taking over a good, cohesive team, and I am looking forward to this challenge.”
