Vasaloppet in Sweden – the Mecca of cross-country skiing

Formula 1 has Monaco, tennis has Wimbledon, cycling has the Tour de France—and cross-country skiing has the Vasaloppet in Sweden. As one of the oldest and probably the longest ski marathons in the world, the Vasaloppet in the Dalarna region is one of the ultimate highlights of a ski holiday in Sweden. Every year, up to 15,000 cross-country skiers, from enthusiastic amateur winter-sports enthusiasts to professionals, take to the trails to cover the 90 kilometres from Sälen to Mora.

Vasaloppet in Sweden

True to the Olympic motto “Taking part is what counts,” simply reaching the finish line in the Vasaloppet in Sweden can be considered a personal victory over one’s inner demons. Unfortunately, the athletes will have little time to admire the winter landscape alongside the cross-country trails in Dalarna—unlike the many spectators.

Accommodation in Sweden

The holiday apartments in Sälen and Mora are naturally ideal accommodation for participants and spectators of the Vasaloppet in Sweden, so booking early is strongly recommended. The starting gun for this year’s Vasaloppet from Sälen to Mora will sound in the early hours of 7 March. As always, the dedicated organisers of the Vasaloppet in Sweden will also provide a varied programme of events, beginning at the end of February.

An event on the scale of the Vasaloppet in Sweden naturally casts a long shadow, reaching as far as the Snow Festival in the towns of Sälen, Mora and Älvdalen. On 26 February 2010, a good week before the Vasaloppet in Sweden, visitors to the Snow Festival in Älvdalen, Mora and Sälen will be treated to a wide range of winter sports and entertainment. For the first time, visitors can travel to the Vasaloppet in Sweden on special trains from Stockholm and Gothenburg. The national railway company SJ is also arranging transfers from local holiday homes to the Vasaloppet trails.
