Ski & Snowboard Freeride Inferno in Ischgl
For the past five years, the new year has begun with a spectacular event in Ischgl, one of Austria’s best-known ski resorts—and this winter is no exception. On January 23, 2010, the Frejns Ski & Snowboard Inferno kicks off in Ischgl, one of the largest and oldest professional freeride events in Tyrol. The event has been held in Ischgl for five years, but its history goes back much further, to 1985, when it began in Zürs am Arlberg. Since 1999, freeride ski and snowboard races in Austria have been held as part of the Frejns Snowboard Inferno series, which, like the first event of its kind, was founded by Martin Freinademetz.

At the Ski & Snowboard Freeride Inferno in Tyrol, however, it’s not just sport that takes center stage around the holiday apartments and hotels in Ischgl—the social side of winter is important, too. Once (hopefully) all the skiers and snowboarders have made it safely from the summit down to the valley, the organizers invite everyone to après-ski in Ischgl, with a large bonfire and barbecue. The €30 entry fee per person covers participation in the Frejns Ski & Snowboard Freeride Inferno, a ski pass, and food at the barbecue and chill-out afterward in Ischgl.
Depending on snow and weather conditions in Ischgl, race officials will set a course away from the regular runs in an area safe from avalanches on the day of the event. Ski and snowboard competitors are ranked separately, and the course covers between 500 and 1,200 vertical meters. The rules of the 25th Ski & Snowboard Freeride Inferno in Tyrol are very simple: a mass start at the summit, and whoever reaches the finish first is crowned the winner at the Ischgl event.
