Inga-Lami Race – Norway’s biggest cross-country skiing event

On March 10, 2010, the traditional Inga-Lami Race will once again start in Lillehammer, a well-known ski resort near Trondheim, Norway. This cross-country skiing event is open exclusively to women and is considered the largest women’s cross-country race not only in Norway but throughout Scandinavia. The Inga-Lami Race takes place at Birkebeiner Ski Stadium near the ski hotels in Lillehammer as part of a cross-country marathon over the nearby mountain Fjell, covering 56 kilometers and 1,100 meters of elevation gain. Both women and men may take part in the marathon. At the Inga-Lami Race, women with sporting ambitions can choose between distances of 15 and 30 kilometers.

Cross-country skiing in Norway, or more precisely the Inga-Lami Race in Lillehammer, has its roots in the story of a woman of that name who, around 800 years ago, is said to have been the king’s lover and to have borne him an heir to the throne. The Birkebeiner, a people who lived in Norway at the time, helped Inga Lami and the heir to the throne, Haakon Haakonsson, escape across Mount Fjell, which today is at the heart of the cross-country event in Lillehammer near Trondheim.
