Wickie and the Strong Men as Snow Sculptures in Ischgl

Ischgl is considered one of the most exclusive ski resorts in all of Austria and is located in western Tyrol. Among the many other events, a unique exhibition of snow sculptures is one of the highlights of this winter in Ischgl.

For the 17th time, artists from around the world are creating impressive sculptures in Ischgl using only ice and snow. This year, the “Formen in Weiß” competition in Ischgl is themed around the popular animated series “Wickie and the Strong Men.” Ski holidaymakers can watch the ten finalists at work from January 11 to 15, 2010, and see at close range how delicate works of art are created from snow and ice.

The sculptures are carved in the Silvretta Arena, not far from the hotels and holiday apartments in Ischgl, and remain there until the end of the ski season in May, weather permitting. In the coming weeks, an independent jury will decide which artists will be invited to Ischgl in January to create Viking ships or sculptures in the style of Wickie, Halvar, Faxe, or Snorre in the Silvretta Arena. The decision will be based on designs submitted to the jury, which must then be brought to life with as much attention to detail as possible.

In Ischgl, none other than Wickie and the Strong Men themselves will serve as the jury. The Vikings from the far north of Europe will of course be sure to inspect the snow sculptures in Ischgl in person and choose the winner on January 15, 2010. What’s more, Wickie and the Strong Men will be available for an autograph session on the final day as part of a big Wickie party in Ischgl.
