Lillehammer and its hidden winter paradise
Lillehammer is one of Norway’s better-known ski resorts, not least because it hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics. Located in the northern part of mainland Norway, Lillehammer is also reachable by plane from Germany in 3–4 hours. Since the slopes and cross-country trails in Lillehammer are particularly busy during the peak winter season, it can certainly be worth making the extra journey to the smaller ski areas in the immediate surroundings of the Olympic city. The Skeikampen ski area is a good example of a ski holiday in Norway away from mass tourism.
Skeikampen lies just under 50 kilometers north of Lillehammer and is considered one of the most snow-reliable ski resorts in all of Norway. Among the roughly 60,000 tourists who make their way to Skeikampen each year are mainly families with children and smaller groups, who appreciate the idyllic, affordable ski hotels and vacation apartments in Lillehammer as ideal accommodation for a winter holiday in Norway. Perfectly groomed slopes and cross-country trails of varying difficulty attract beginners to the Skeikampen ski area in Norway, as well as ambitious winter sports enthusiasts looking for a special challenge.
Skeikampen is a few kilometers outside Lillehammer, making a ski holiday in Norway—a country otherwise known for its relatively high prices—a little more affordable. The extensive, uncrowded slopes and cross-country trails in little-known Skeikampen also offer a high degree of safety, as does the thorough instruction at the local ski schools, where lessons are given in several languages, including German, and, on request, in smaller groups.
