ADAC honors ski resorts in the Alps
Every year, the ADAC publishes its SkiGuide, providing winter vacationers with the latest tips and trends from ski resorts in the Alps. The latest edition, “ADAC SkiGuide 2010“, is now available in stores or directly from the ADAC. For years, one of the book’s highlights has been its list of the best ski resorts in the Alps, taking into account the categories of alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, family-friendliness, and “Rising Star of the Year.” As has become almost traditional, ski resorts in Austria and Switzerland have once again pulled clearly ahead of their immediate competitors in the Alps.

In the alpine skiing category, the ADAC rates the ski resort of Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn, highest. The Swiss resort impressed the jury with both its excellently groomed slopes and the spectacular backdrop of the Matterhorn, as well as its superb infrastructure of mountain railways, lifts, and hotels in Zermatt. The resorts of Ötztal (South Tyrol) and Trois Vallées (France) did not fare much worse, with the latter region considered the largest ski resort in the world.
When assessing family-friendliness, the ADAC focused above all on the availability of certified ski schools and slopes and trails suitable for children. In the opinion of the independent jury, these criteria are best met this winter in the Stubai Valley (Austria), ahead of the resorts of Villars-sur-Ollon (Switzerland) and Kronplatz (South Tyrol). For cross-country skiing, the ADAC once again considers Switzerland, with the Engadin / St. Moritz ski resort, to offer the best winter sports. Austria follows in second and third place with the regions of Seefeld and Schladming.
In general, however, winter sports in the Alps stand for the highest quality and carefree fun in the snow, so the leading ski resorts differ from one another only in minor ways. The ADAC will continue to keep a close eye on ski resorts in the Alps in the years ahead, helping to maintain the consistently high quality of winter vacations.
