Oberhof ski hall set to open

Some call it a ski hall, while others stick with the project’s original name and call the new prestige project in Oberhof, Thuringia, a ski tunnel. Whatever title the interested observer ultimately chooses, one thing already seems clear, a good three weeks before the opening: the ski hall in Oberhof has enormous potential for success.

Opening on August 24

Before the ski hall opens to the public on August 24, the German women’s biathlon A-team, including Kati Wilhelm and Martina Beck (formerly Glagow), visited Thuringia yesterday, Wednesday, to take their first test laps in the Oberhof ski hall.

The impressions were uniformly positive, much to the delight of the political and business dignitaries who were also present and hope the ski hall will give the region around Oberhof a new boost. Oberhof is considered a biathlon mecca not only in Germany and has made a name for itself in winter sports as a host of Biathlon and Nordic Combined World Cup events. The ski hall now makes it possible to hit the trails in summer, too, and stay fit or get into shape for the coming winter. Cross-country skiing and biathlon are now possible in Oberhof even during the warmer months, on a 1.9-kilometer trail.

The operating company has already announced plans to open a shooting hall in summer 2010. It will adjoin the ski hall and is intended to complete the biathlon experience. According to managing director Jan Völker, funding for the shooting hall, which will cost around one million euros, has already been secured; construction of the ski hall has already cost 13 million euros. The operators of hotels and vacation rentals in Oberhof and the surrounding area also hope to benefit from positive synergies created by the ski hall.
