Breckenridge, Colorado, winter sports resort celebrates birthday

Breckenridge Ski Resort is located in the US state of Colorado and, according to the BBC, is among the top 5 ski resorts in the United States, as a survey conducted by the broadcaster in 2006 found. Since then, no expense or effort has been spared in Breckenridge to maintain this status and build on it. Its membership in the internationally renowned Vail Resorts further underscores the high quality of Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado.

Largest winter sports area in the USA

When the ski lifts in the mountains around Breckenridge reopen on November 7—their capacity is, incidentally, the greatest in the entire United States—not only will impeccably groomed slopes and cross-country trails be waiting for winter sports enthusiasts from around the world. This year, Breckenridge is celebrating its 150th birthday, more precisely, tomorrow, Wednesday. When Breckenridge was founded on July 1, 1859, by the forefathers of today’s residents, skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing were still unheard of. In the midst of the gold rush that swept through the western United States, and Colorado in particular, in the mid-19th century, some prospectors settled in what is now Breckenridge and founded a small settlement.

From gold rush to ski tourism

The gold rush ended, but Breckenridge remained, allowing a ski tourism industry of sorts to develop there from the early 1960s onward. From a handful of ski vacationers who came to Breckenridge from nearby areas, the Colorado ski resort first became known across the United States and eventually in the Old World across the Atlantic as well. Most recently, around 1.5 million vacationers from all over the world have been counted at the lifts in Colorado, enjoying excellent conditions in vacation rentals and hotels in Breckenridge. Numerous events are also planned for the 2009/10 winter season to mark the anniversary, making a ski vacation in Breckenridge even more appealing.
