New ski area planned in the canton of Uri
The largest ski area in Central Switzerland is set to take shape around the well-known ski resort of Andermatt in the canton of Uri over the next few years. To this end, the existing Stöckli-Gütsch ski area above Andermatt is to be expanded many times over, eventually stretching from Andermatt to Sedrun. The Egyptian hotel chain Sawiris and Andermatt Gotthard Sportbahnen (AGS), regarded as the driving forces behind the plans, have already commissioned several feasibility studies to examine various designs for the future ski area between Andermatt and Sedrun.
In this context, Sawiris plans to build a hotel in Andermatt, which is due to open its doors near the existing ski area by 2013 at the latest. The first phase of the expansion of the ski area on the Gotthard is also expected to be completed around the same time, with the entire project due to be finished soon afterwards. If the project receives approval from the local authorities, the only remaining obstacle on the way to the new ski area in Andermatt will be cost planning.
As Sawiris and AGS acknowledged, there is currently no estimate that would give even an approximate indication of the financial scale of the multimillion-franc project in Central Switzerland. Since the investors are financially solid partners and the proposed ski area in the canton of Uri is likely to have enormous potential for the future, failure due to cost is considered rather unlikely.
