New downhill run planned in Braunlage (Harz)
Barely has the 2008/09 winter season properly ended, and planning is already under way in the Harz for the next ski season, which will begin this autumn. In Braunlage, some members of the town council are campaigning for a new downhill run for alpine skiers, which could further enhance the appeal of the local ski area on the Wurmberg. The administrative committee, whose members represent all political groups, recently agreed on a formal resolution concerning the planned downhill run, which is to be submitted to the town council for a final vote very soon.
According to the plan, a new downhill run with a total length of just over one kilometre is to be built on the Wurmberg. The sticking point so far has been that, in addition to the actual ski run, extensive upgrades and additions to the infrastructure in and around Braunlage would also be needed. If the project goes ahead, one of the largest towns in the Harz would face total costs of around three million euros, some of which would be covered by grants from higher-level authorities.
At the beginning of the week, the new downhill run on the Wurmberg in the Harz was still in doubt, after the Braunlage town council’s transport committee failed to agree on how to proceed. Braunlage town hall promptly declared the administrative committee responsible, meaning that the final decision on the Wurmberg downhill run now rests with the town council.
