Floodlit skiing fun in the Bernese Oberland

The Kaisereggbahnen in the Bernese Oberland are following a trend that is growing increasingly popular, especially in Switzerland but also in the neighboring Alpine region: skiing and sledding under floodlights. The new offering has been available since the start of the current winter season and, according to the Kaisereggbahnen, has been very well received by ski tourists. Adolf Kaeser, managing director of the cable car company, particularly highlights the special atmosphere of skiing at night and can easily imagine continuing or expanding the offering beyond this winter season.

The Kaisereggbahnen killed two birds with one stone when installing floodlights along the roughly four-kilometer downhill run (blue slope). Since installing the new snowmaking system already required a power line to be laid, they decided to install floodlights at the same time. The slope lighting, consisting of 25 spotlights, cost a relatively modest 12,000 francs; the added value for the Kaisereggbahnen is unmistakable, says Kaeser.

So far, the Kaisereggbahnen’s night slopes have been open to skiers and snowboarders every Thursday from 18:30 to 21:00, with the cable car’s last descent scheduled for 22:30. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the floodlit slope is reserved for sledders during the same lift hours.
