Ice Camp on the Kitzsteinhorn is open
For several days now, the traditional Ice Camp on the Kitzsteinhorn in Austria has once again opened its icy gates to adventurous winter holidaymakers. The Ice Camp is located 2,500 metres above sea level and offers seven sleeping igloos, four communal igloos and a wide range of leisure activities. First offered in the 2006/07 winter season, the Ice Camp on the Kitzsteinhorn has since become well known and is growing in popularity. But it is not only the 200 overnight guests who bring the Ice Camp on the Kitzsteinhorn to life; during the day, it is also a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders. Last winter, around 200,000 guests visited the Ice Camp.
The communal igloos include a bar, a lounge and other facilities designed to encourage people to socialise. The sleeping igloos are made from 1.20-metre-thick blocks of ice, and their inner walls are lined with reindeer hides to make them feel a little cosier and not quite so cold. Even so, the room temperature is unlikely to rise much above zero degrees. Warm clothing, especially sturdy footwear, is therefore essential for an overnight stay at the Ice Camp on the Kitzsteinhorn.
The sporting highlights at the Ice Camp on the Kitzsteinhorn include night hikes, ice climbing and archery. The sauna and the heated outdoor Jacuzzi provide an opportunity to relax. An overnight stay with breakfast at the Ice Camp on the Kitzsteinhorn costs 147 euros per person. Showers are available at the nearby Bundessportheim and are included in the price.
