German Snowkite Championships at Reschen Pass (South Tyrol)
Lake Reschen in the Reschen Pass ski region in South Tyrol will host the 4th International German Snowkite Championships from February 6–8, 2009. Snowkiting involves winter sports enthusiasts on skis or snowboards being pulled along by one or more large kites. The four events at the German Snowkite Championships on Lake Reschen will be Ski Freestyle, Ski Race, Snowboard Freestyle and Snowboard Race.
Alongside the German Championships, which are open only to competitors from Germany, there will also be an international category in all four events at this snowkite event at Reschen Pass. Pascal Matzke, head of the organizing committee, expects snowkiters from Germany, Austria, France, Norway, Eastern Europe and Switzerland in particular to make their way to Reschen Pass in South Tyrol.
This year, Lake Reschen in South Tyrol will host the German Championships for the second time. Uli Stampfer of the Reschen Pass ski region therefore describes Lake Reschen, with some pride and probably rightly so, as one of the leading snowkiting areas in the Alps. Stampfer promises participants excellent sporting conditions in early February in the tri-border area of Italy, Austria and Switzerland, and also hopes for a large spectator turnout at Reschen Pass. The ice on Lake Reschen is currently about 30 centimeters thick. In addition, there is a continuous snow cover at least 20 centimeters deep.
