Winterberg invites visitors to Snowball Fight World Championship

The winter sports resort of Winterberg, one of the best-known destinations in the Sauerland ski region, invites visitors to the unofficial Snowball Fight World Championship on March 7, 2009. There are no formal entry requirements, so anyone who enjoys snow and winter and wants to compete against teams from around the world in throwing snowballs can take part.

20 teams in the snowball fight

The number of participating teams is limited to 20, however, so a little luck is needed to be able to compete in Winterberg at all. Since the beginning of the year, interested teams have been able to apply to the organizers to take part; the deadline is mid-February. Ultimately, selection is based on criteria such as the team’s country of origin, the originality of its name, and its throwing and training strategies. The teams’ origins are particularly important, as the organizers want the Snowball Fight World Championship to live up to its name as much as possible. So far, inquiries have come from almost every part of Germany, as well as from the Netherlands, Belgium and other neighboring European countries. A team from as far away as Japan has also announced that it will travel to Winterberg in the Sauerland.

World champion in snowball throwing

The world champion in snowball throwing will be determined as follows. In a qualifying round, the 20 teams first compete for a place in the round of 16. The tournament then continues as a knockout competition until the winning team is decided at around 9 p.m. The playing area is a 5 x 10 meter field divided down the middle by a barrier. In two halves of 3 minutes each, the aim is to hit the opposing team as often as possible.

In addition to the sporting winners, prizes will also go to the most original costume and the loudest fan club, so there will be several winners in Winterberg on March 7.
