Tyrol attracts visitors with skiing and snowboarding events
In February, the Tyrol ski and winter sports region has a series of top-class events in store for freestyle, skiing and snowboarding fans. For years, they have been among the highlights throughout Austria. At venues in Innsbruck, Pillerseetal, Lienz and on the Kaunertal Glacier, the organisers are expecting not only a full house but also promise skiing and snowboarding action and parties of the very highest calibre.
The season of the so-called midwinter contests kicks off on 31 January (Saturday) with the traditional “Air & Style“ in the Tyrolean capital, Innsbruck. “Air & Style“ is an event where the competitors show off their skills to the crowd with breathtaking jumps in the quarterpipe. The event takes place on Berg Isel in Innsbruck, which is also home to the Olympic ski jump, among other things.
From 5–15 February, freeriders in Pillerseetal will get their money's worth at Austria's only Big Mountain contest, a competition in the highest category. With a total prize fund of 10,000 euros, the event challenges competitors to find the most spectacular route down into the valley within a set time limit. In Pillerseetal, the freeriders will be riding on the Wildseeloder and Fieberbrunn's local mountain.
This year, the snowboarding and freeski event “Sunsitepark Open“ in Lienz on 7 February (Saturday) serves as a qualifier for the “n.asa Austrian Masters“ and the “Austrian Freeski Open“. A week later, on 14 February, the event “Chill and Destroy“ on the Kaunertal Glacier will also offer coveted tickets to the snowboard and freeride tour finals.
