Cross-country skiing World Cup comes to Düsseldorf
As soon as the name of the Rhine metropolis Düsseldorf is mentioned, the average person thinks first of Alt beer, perhaps carnival, but certainly not of skiing or cross-country skiing. But that is exactly what spectators along the Rhine can enjoy in Düsseldorf next weekend, as the world’s best cross-country skiers compete for valuable World Cup points in the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. This year marks the 7th edition of the ski competition in Düsseldorf, which has become an established fixture on the cross-country skiing World Cup calendar. The cross-country skiing events take place on 20 and 21 December, Saturday and Sunday, while the supporting programme gets underway tomorrow, Friday.
As Düsseldorf is not one of Germany’s traditional ski resorts and natural snowfall on the Lower Rhine is extremely rare, artificial snow from the Neuss ski hall provides a reliable solution. Alongside the West German Ski Association and Düsseldorf Marketing and Tourism GmbH, the Neuss ski hall is also organising this popular event on the Rhine. The cross-country skiing World Cup in Düsseldorf owes its large crowds not only to the high sporting standard, but also to its varied supporting programme.
A toboggan run and a ski lesson will keep the children entertained, while a large event stage is being set up at Düsseldorf’s Burgplatz. DJ Charly from the Neuss ski hall, pop-schlager performers such as Nic P., Jörg Bausch and Die Lolliers, as well as the Swiss cover band “Noisebrothers“ will keep the atmosphere lively on all three days. Admission to the cross-country skiing World Cup in Düsseldorf is free for all visitors.
