Ski resorts in Tyrol and Upper Bavaria join forces in cross-border project

A total of eleven winter sports resorts in the ski areas of Tyrol (Österreich) and Upper Bavaria (Germany) are involved in a joint project to protect the environment. The “Tiroler Zugspitzarena” tourism association has now announced further details in Ehrwald (Tyrol) about the so-called “Happy Skicard,” which allows holders to ski not only in eight ski areas in Tyrol, but also in three places around the Zugspitze in Upper Bavaria. In Austria, in addition to Ehrwald, Berwang, Biberwier, Bichlbach, Heiterwang, Lähn-Wengle, Lermoos and Namlos are taking part in the environmental project, while on the other side of the Zugspitze, in Upper Bavaria, the participating resorts are Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald and Seefeld.

The “Happy Skicard” entitles holders not only to ski in all eleven of the ski areas mentioned, but also to free travel on the regional railway line between Vils (Tyrol) and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Upper Bavaria. This allows winter sports tourists to leave their cars behind and, if they wish, travel between the various holiday resorts, saving both money and the environment. The winter sports resorts around the Zugspitze, which is also Germany’s highest mountain, are holding this event for the first time and can imagine repeating it regularly in the future, provided tourists make sufficient use of the offer. The event runs from 20.12.2008 through 13.04.2009, the end of the winter sports season on the Zugspitze.
