Children ski for free in the Allgäu on the fourth Sunday of Advent
Families with children who love skiing can look forward to an early Christmas present. This year, too, numerous cable car and lift operators in the Allgäu and Upper Bavaria will once again take part in a nationwide campaign on the fourth Sunday of Advent, the last Sunday before Christmas (December 21), allowing children and young people under 16 to ski or snowboard free of charge all day. This so-called free lift day for children and young people, which is attended by around 60 mountain railway operators throughout Germany, has traditionally been held on the fourth Sunday of Advent for several years and is organized under the auspices of the Association of German Cableways and Drag Lifts. The only requirement for using the participating mountain railways free of charge is that the children and young people hit the slopes accompanied by at least one paying parent.
The Allgäu, like Upper Bavaria, is one of southern Germany’s most popular ski destinations, especially for families. The reliable snow cover in the higher-altitude ski areas is one of the main advantages of winter sports in the Allgäu and Upper Bavaria. At lower elevations, artificially snow-covered and very well-groomed pistes and cross-country trails offer plenty of fun in the snow.
