Winter Sports in the Karwendel Mountains, Tyrol
As soon as the first snowflakes fall in October, the region around the Karwendel Mountains in Tyrol (Austria) reveals itself as a true paradise for winter sports enthusiasts of every kind. Between the winter sports resorts of Schwatz and Pillberg on Kellerjoch, and Weerberg, the Karwendel Mountains in the Austrian Alps attract locals and tourists alike with cross-country ski trails, downhill slopes, toboggan runs, and simply wonderful hiking opportunities. But the Karwendel Mountains in Tyrol offer plenty of variety not only in terms of winter sports; the same is true of the people who make up the tourist groups. Whether singles, couples, youth groups, or families, the Karwendel Mountains in Tyrol have something to suit everyone.
For fans of cross-country skiing and other Nordic ski disciplines, the Karwendel Mountains offer trails totaling around 500 kilometers, with routes for every skill level. There are also trails groomed for either the classic style or the more athletic skating style, and they are always kept in excellent condition. For a thrilling toboggan ride, the 8-kilometer run from Innerst to the Weidener Hütte near Weerberg is especially recommended. This run is not only the longest in the Karawendel Mountains, but also one of the longest toboggan runs in all of Tyrol.
Although the Karawendel Mountains themselves are not particularly suited to hiking, the valley of the same name and the Tux Alps provide alternatives, stretching between or opposite the Karawendel. The region around Seefeld and Lake Achensee is especially recommended for hikers, as it offers miles of routes specifically prepared for hiking, ready to welcome eager walkers.
