Get fit in good time before your ski holiday
“Skifoan” will soon be back on the agenda, and not just in Austria’s ski resorts. Frau Holle is being kind to ski enthusiasts. Still, quite some time has passed since the last ski season. Most skiers are no longer in peak shape. That’s why it’s important to get physically prepared for your planned ski holiday. People tend to overestimate their fitness all too often. Then, when unfit skiers charge down their first runs, their ski holiday can come as a rude awakening.
Getting ready for your ski holiday
Perhaps everything goes quite well at the start of your ski holiday. But by the third or fourth day on the slopes, your body is sure to start showing signs of fatigue. That’s why it’s so important to prepare properly before your ski holiday.

You should exercise for half an hour, two or three days a week. This will already strengthen your abdominal and back muscles, which is especially important for the popular style of carving. And you can easily work out at home—you don’t need a gym.
Sit-ups and the rocking exercise are recommended for strengthening the pelvic floor. To do the rocking exercise, lie face down on the floor, then lift your legs and arms. Alternatively, lie on your back with your feet planted and lift your pelvis for a few seconds.
Build your endurance beforehand
Regular cycling and running are also great ways to prepare for a ski holiday. Nordic walking and swimming are good options too. They help strengthen your heart and circulation.
Balance exercises are helpful as well. You can even practise them in the morning while brushing your teeth on one leg. Skiers should also remember to warm up first—for example, with squats as a stretching exercise before heading out on the slopes. Skiing will be even more fun that way.
