Iceland offers six months of skiing
A ski holiday in Iceland may sound rather icy. But thanks to the warming Gulf Stream, the island is a wonderful place to explore, especially in the off-season. Contrasts of ice and fire, glaciers and volcanoes make for unforgettable ski holiday experiences. Even a weekend getaway in Iceland is a fantastic experience. Crystal-clear air stretches like a sheet over the snowy landscape all the way to the horizon.
Keflavik Airport is in the southwest of Iceland. Icelandair offers attractive special fares for last-minute travelers. Volcanic baths and Iceland’s largest ski area, Blafjöll, are not far away. Nor is the capital, Reykjavik, 20 km west of the ski area—just about a half-hour drive away.

Icelanders traditionally explore the island’s mountains and lava fields on horseback. Even inexperienced riders are in good hands on the patient Icelandic horses. A dip in the Blue Lagoon afterwards offers wonderful relaxation and warmth (38°C).
If that doesn’t provide enough of an adrenaline rush, you can ski down one of Bjaföll’s 19 runs. The ski lifts operate for six months each year. Floodlights improve visibility on short days. And there’s only one place to go for après-ski: the capital, Reykjavik. Te og Kaffi café alone offers 20 kinds of coffee and 80 kinds of tea.
Even in winter, you can swim in the capital’s heated outdoor pool. The hot pots, surrounded by deep snow, reach temperatures of up to 44°C. It’s a relaxing way to end a day of skiing.
Skiers can enjoy 11 lifts and cross-country trails measuring 3, 5 and 10 kilometers (with 5 km illuminated) in Bjaföll. Ski lessons are available on weekends or by arrangement.
