Most Canadians live in major cities near the US border, such as Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, or in the capital, Ottawa, home to the world's longest skating rink along the Rideau Canal. Canada's breathtakingly beautiful landscapes provide habitat and protection for many endangered species. It isn't just nature lovers who are captivated by the country's fascinating natural beauty. Niagara Falls, the vast lakes, 37 national parks and, of course, the Rocky Mountains all hold visitors spellbound.
The champagne powder of the Rocky Mountains offers ski holidaymakers in Canada the finest powder snow amid breathtaking scenery. It's enough to get any adventurer's heart racing. In remote backcountry areas, you may even encounter some of the local wildlife. The small ski town of Banff, with a population of 4,000, lies south of the national park of the same name. Stoney Squaw Mountain and the Tunnel and Rundle Mountains surround the town with an impressive mountain backdrop. Winter hikes through almost untouched powder-snow terrain reveal unique panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains. It's not uncommon to come across squirrels, grizzly bears, elk or wapiti deer.
Heli-skiing and exhilarating deep-powder excursions are very popular in Canada. Whistler, one of Canada's top ski resorts, is especially recommended at Christmas. Its almost limitless ski runs are spectacular. Blackcomb Mountain and Whistler offer a 2,800-hectare ski area with 1,600 m of vertical drop. Ski holidaymakers will find North America's longest run here (11 km). (The luxury Chateau Whistler hotel is right on the slopes. The log-cabin chalets offer relaxing comfort and coziness. The appealing ski resort of Whistler will also host the Winter Olympics in 2010. It's well worth exploring the ski regions, which reach elevations of up to 2,300 m, with experienced guides. Or take in the lively town of Whistler itself. Its car-free pedestrian zone has plenty of bars, shops and restaurants.
The award-winning, cozy ski village of Sun Peaks is just about 45 minutes from Kamloops Airport. With 5 to 6 m of powder snow and hotels and gourmet restaurants right on the slopes, it offers ski holidaymakers a true paradise!
