Großglockner ski area welcomes ski holidaymakers
The Kals and Matrei Goldried ski areas are joining forces as the new Großglockner Kals-Matrei ski area for the winter season. 100 kilometres of slopes offer fascinating views of Austria’s highest mountain, the Großglockner.
At 3,798 m, the Großglockner in Tyrol is Austria’s highest peak. The pyramid-shaped mountain actually consists of two parts: the Großglockner and the Kleinglockner.

The majestic mountain scenery alone promises a fantastic ski holiday. But that’s not all. Young skiers have something to look forward to: children’s rates for guests up to the age of 18 have been announced for the coming winter season. From March 2009, low-season prices apply, except at Easter.
Another highlight of the new Großglockner ski area is its new heated six-seater chairlift. It took ski holidaymakers up to the 2,405 m-high Großglockner station as early as last season. It is the first heated chairlift in East Tyrol. Skiers and snowboarders can look forward to wonderful powder slopes and fantastic runs for all ability levels, as well as three snowmaking-equipped valley runs. There are also half-pipes, fun parks and a fantastic carving slope at the Gschlöss lift. The lively ski resort of Matrei lies in the sunny Iseltal valley in Hohe Tauern National Park. Kids will find easy ski runs here at the Goldried mountain station. Kals, at the foot of the Großglockner, offers a more challenging experience.
Since 90% of the slopes can be covered with artificial snow, the high altitude is not the only factor ensuring excellent snow reliability. The first snow fell as early as September this year, raising hopes of an early start to the ski season. If snow conditions are good, the Matrei ski lifts may open as early as mid-November. In total, the ski area has 16 lift facilities and 390 hectares of ski slopes at elevations of up to 2,600 m.
