The Allgäu offers a wide range of sports. From water sports to alpine sports, there’s plenty to enjoy here. It is considered Germany’s largest winter sports centre and its most popular year-round holiday destination. Tourists are especially taken with the Allgäu’s diversity. Skiing, ice skating and cross-country skiing on an extensive network of trails draw holidaymakers every winter. And, of course, so does the magnificent mountain scenery.
The Ammergau Alps lie in the southeast of the Allgäu. The highest Allgäu mountains are on the main ridge. At 2,657 metres, the Krottenkopf is considered the highest peak, while the Hohe Licht, at 2,652 metres, is the second highest. Many Allgäu peaks lie directly on the Austrian border.
The Nebelhorn is also very popular. The Nebelhorn cable car takes visitors up to the summit, where ski holidaymakers can enjoy a magnificent view across the Alpine landscape.
The Allgäu Alps have many other striking mountains: Biberkopf, Grünten, Hochvogel, Hohen Ifen, Höfats, Mädelegabel, Moränenhügel, Schneck, Trettachspitze, Wertacher Hörnle and Widderstein. The varied Alpine landscape offers a true skier’s paradise.
