Skiing in Poland’s skiing paradise, the Giant Mountains

The beauty of the Giant Mountains enchanted holidaymakers as early as the 18th and 19th centuries. The Schneekoppe in particular drew people there, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Theodor Körner.

The landscape is very varied, ranging from gentle hills to rugged peaks. It is well worth discovering the natural beauty on hikes, just as the great poets did. The Giant Mountains reveal their beauty in summer and winter alike.

The Polish Giant Mountains have also become a popular ski holiday destination. The range of skiing options on the 1,602 m-high Schneekoppe (Sniezka) is constantly being improved and modernized.

The town of Jelenia Gora is the tourist center of the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze). Three of Poland’s leading ski resorts are in the region: Jakuszyce, Karpacz (Krummhübel) and Szklarska Poreba (Schreiberhau). The Sniezka 1602 ski area and Skiarena Szrenica offer more than 40 kilometers of slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers. In addition, 300 kilometers of cross-country trails are groomed for the winter season, some to the highest FIS standard.

Here you can go snowboarding, downhill skiing and cross-country skiing. The Giant Mountains also offer wonderful ski touring routes along the hiking trails. Ski and snowboard instructors are highly qualified.

Jakobsthal (Szklarska Poręba-Jakuszyce) is a skiing paradise. The Piast Race (Bieg Piastów) is held there every March. This cross-country ski marathon is considered one of Europe’s largest skiing competitions. A dog-sled training center is also located nearby on the Polana Jakuszycka plateau. Dog-sledding enthusiasts gather in “Polish Alaska” from December to March.
